John Archbold

John Archbold, DA, a distinguished artist, came into the world in Glasgow in 1954. His artistic journey found its roots at the Glasgow School of Art, where he dedicated himself to the study of Drawing & Painting from 1972 to 1976. In those formative years, the industrial grandeur of Glasgow's River Clyde and its shipbuilding industry deeply influenced his early work, though this era has sadly waned into history. It was during this time that he also delved into the world of life drawing and painting, a passion that remains a cornerstone of his artistic expression.

John's path then led him to Jordanhill College of Education, and by 1977, he was appointed Itinerant Teacher of Art and Design on the Isle of Mull. His journey continued in 1983 when he assumed the role of Principal Teacher of Art and Design at Tobermory High School. Throughout his career as an educator, he fervently honed his craft, perpetually inspired by the island's breath-taking landscapes.

The transformative magic of the Hebrides cast a spell on Archbold, infusing his palette with the ethereal blues of the region's light and a rich array of textures and colours drawn from the sea and shore. His artistic exploration gave rise to powerful portrayals of Mull's land and seascapes, as well as the broader West Coast of Scotland. These works marked a significant departure from his earlier creations rooted in the urban milieu of Glasgow.

As a testament to his dedication to his craft, John Archbold is a founding member of the Scottish ruralists, a collective formed in 1993 during a painting expedition around the Arisaig area. This group of painters convenes regularly, seeking inspiration from various locales, primarily along the west coast of Scotland.

John's retirement from teaching in 2010 ushered in a new chapter in his artistic evolution. With an abundance of time to devote to his craft, he embarked on diverse artistic directions, exploring a wide range of media, scales, and subject matter. His open-air drawing and painting experiences have breathed fresh life into his studio pieces, invigorating his artistic practice.

One of the hallmarks of John's artistic ethos is his unwavering curiosity and propensity for experimentation. His years as an educator, working with pupils across a spectrum of disciplines and materials in both 2D and 3D realms, have left an indelible mark on his creative spirit. John is a versatile artist, comfortable in exploring various media, and he welcomes the challenges that each new commission brings.

Visitors to Mull are graciously invited to explore John's world by visiting his studio in Lochdon. It's a place where art takes shape, and the island's beauty comes to life on canvas.
